Why Us
Why Smart Timber ?
The clever people at Smart Timber can supply you with a building package for your
next construction project that is fast-to-install, and features a range of timber systems
and technologies not readily available from other suppliers in Western Australia.
Build it fast.
From our central location in Kewdale, we design, engineer and manufacture structures using the latest rapid timber-based building technologies from Europe and the United States.
Our structures save you time and money – typically cutting site-labour by 20-70%.
Build it right.
Smart Timber’s building packages are engineered to be compliant with both Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia. Supplied in a convenient kit-form, they can be installed by either the skilled-handyperson or through our network of professional installers. It’s your choice.
From a simple outdoor gazebo right through to a double-storey home, we can help you.
Our range includes:
- Gazebos, pavillions, and spa structures
- Outdoor rooms, outdoor kitchens & studios
- Granny flats
- Light commecial offices
- Holiday homes
- Custom designed house packages
Why timber?
Compared to alternatives (such as bricks, concrete and steel)
you should choose timber because it is:
- Lighter
- Easier to cut, join, drill and form
- Has a better Strength-to-Weight ratio
- The only renewable building material readily available
- Has lower Embodied Energy
- Results in a more energy efficient home, with out the cost and hassle of additional insulation
- And is safer in fires than steel framed construction
That is why structural and engineered timber components are now the
#1 construction material world-wide.
Why engineered timber ?
Engineered timbers are even stronger, more consistent and more installer-friendly.
What other building material offers all of these benefits to the builder, the owner and the environment?
The engineered timbers we currently use in our building packages include:
- Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)
- Oriented Strand Board (OSB)
- Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVLs)
- Structural Timber I-Beams
- Glue Laminated Timber (Glulams)
- Strucutural Plywood
- Structural micro-fingerjointed lumber
… as well as regular MGP10 structural treated pine
No rot. No termites. No borers. No Arsenic. No worries!
Our structures are treated to Australian Standards and guaranteed for 25-years against insects, borers and rot. But we don’t use timber treated with CCA or other heavy metals.
Instead we using heavy-metal free timber preservatives , fully compliant with Australian Standards:
- Light Organic Solvent Preservatives (LOSP H2 & H3)
- Water-bourne Preservatives (TanAqua H2F)
- Glueline Preservatives (Boron & Bifenthrin H2S)
But what about bricks, concrete and steel?
Admittedly our structures are not 100% timber; we recognise the merits of other materials:
- We use concrete floors for most homes and outbuildings – slab-on-grade is an important part of solar passive design
- We use prefab steel or concrete floors for portable buildings – they are readily cranable.
- We use Colorbond steel roofing – Colorbond is durable and is easier to install than tiles
Smart Timber: A proud history, an exciting future…
Smart Timber has been helping Western Australians build since 1992, and since inception we have built a reputation of bringing new timber-based technologies to WA, including many that are becoming mainstream:
- In 1992 we were the state’s first dedicated merchant of treated pine
- In 1998 we installed and commissioned WA’s first LOSP timber treatment facility
(The first CCA and heavy-metal free treatment plant in the state) - In 2002 we were the first integrated WA manufacturer of treated timber skirtings, architraves and claddings
- In 2006 we were the first WA manufacturer of micro-joint fingerjointed structural timber
- In 2009 we commenced building with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), in association with our sister business – Modrooms.
As we enter our third decade our mission is to be: WA’s leader in rapid building technologies.
